Investigation: Life’s Diversity & Protists
In teams of three, you will investigate members of the Kingdom Protista and produce trading cards of three different groups from this diverse kingdom of organisms.

Required Elements for Trading Cards (two-sided):
Front of card (1/2 of the A4 paper):
Your name(s) and date
A big mug shot (picture or drawing) of your protist for the front of the card
Back of card (1/2 of the A4 paper):
Common and/or scientific name
A small mug shot of your protist
Classification (Taxonomy):
What kingdom do they belong to?
What major group within the kingdom do they belong to?
Are they plant-like (algae), animal-like (protozoans) or fungus-like?
Are they autotrophs (producers) or heterotrophs (consumers)?
For algae: Are they diatoms, dinoflagellates, euglenoids or macroalga?
For Protozoa: Are they ciliates, flagellates or pseudopods?
For fungus-like: Are they slime molds, water molds or downy mildew?
Common characteristics of your group:
Structure: Are they unicellular or multi-cellular? What organelles do they have?
Movement: How do they move from place to place?
How do they get food and energy (i.e. by photosynthesis, ingestion or absorption)?
How does it reproduce (must be detailed)?
o Describe why reproduction is important for your group of protists
o Asexual or sexual reproduction? Describe in detail
o Describe 2-3 advantageous of your protists’ mode of reproduction
Ecology:
Habitat: Where is its favourite hangout (where does it live)?
Importance of your group or organism(s) (e.g. to humans and the environment)
At least ONE interesting fact (more if you can!)
